Rand Fishkin talks about SMX Munich & the future of SEO.
Ten years ago, Rand Fishkin founded Moz (formerly called SEOmoz), which has become one of the most well-known and well respected companies in the field of search marketing. Today, across the globe, every online marketer knows and admires the Wizard of Moz and his outstanding team. Rand Fishkin is also a renown speaker, sharing his knowledge and experiences at many conferences and events, including at SMX Munich.
What do you love most about SMX Munich?
I love the people, the city, and the high quality of information exchanged. I always end up learning a lot and discovering new aspects to our field that help make me a better marketer.
What is the topic of your keynote talk and why would you urge people to attend?
I’m speaking this year about how to stand out in the more and more crowded fields of SEO & content marketing. I perceive this to be the biggest challenge online marketers are facing – as Google has shifted their focus to shut down many of the classic, brute-force tactics, and with the rise of social media, mobile, and brand biasing, SEOs are being asked to make significant changes in their tactics. Frustratingly, the ROI from those changes aren’t always as apparent or as easy-to-measure as the old models.
In your opinion, why should SEOs and online marketers attend SMX Munich 2015?
It’s one of the premier events in the web marketing world. SMX brings together a remarkable quality and quantity of speakers, attendees, and sponsors. The history of the conference means that everyone who comes brings their best material and expects a very demanding audience. Thus, being in the audience means you get to be demanding and hold the conference to a high standard, knowing that it will deliver 🙂
How did you get the name, “The Wizard of Moz”? We’d love to know the story behind that title.
I think my wife came up with that pun many years ago. There’s no particular reference to the Wizard of Oz. I’d like to think that I’m much more accessible and transparent than the man behind the curtain!
What advice can you give SEOs to be more successful in 2015 and beyond?
I’ll give a couple tips:
#1 – Be willing to invest in serendipitous, untrackable (or hard-to-track) forms of marketing. The best returns are often found in the tactics and channels where it’s most difficult to prove ROI (this is because your competition often leaves them unexplored).
#2 – Start paying close attention to things that correlate with rankings, not just things that are directly influencing them. As Google has gotten more and more strict and stringent around webspam, manipulation, and link building, investing in relationships, for example, which correlate well with links, or social media marketing, which correlates well with rankings, can be smarter investments than pursuing only the levers that directly move search algorithms.
Thank you for the interview! We look forward to seeing you at SMX Munich in March 2015!
